Lightning is Bitcoin's fast payment network. Bitcoin moves through channels and payments route across those channels, usually in seconds. You do not need a new on-chain transaction for every coffee or tip.
Most Lightning payments start with an invoice. The receiver chooses an amount and shows a QR code; the sender scans it and pays. Invoices can expire, so make a new one rather than saving an old QR forever.
The useful shortcut BULL Wallet takes
Running your own Lightning node means dealing with channels, inbound liquidity, backups and uptime. That is worth learning later. It is a terrible first lesson for somebody who just wants to buy lunch.
BULL Wallet avoids that work, but you should understand how. Its Instant Payments Wallet is a Liquid wallet, not a native Lightning wallet. When you pay a Lightning invoice, the app swaps your L-BTC to Lightning through the non-custodial Boltz protocol. When somebody pays your invoice, the swap runs in reverse and L-BTC arrives in your wallet.
Bull Bitcoin does not hold the wallet keys. That is the big improvement over a custodial Lightning balance. The tradeoff is that Liquid is a federated sidechain whose functionaries operate the network and secure the Bitcoin peg. Your spending key also lives on your phone. This is a good pocket-wallet setup, not a vault.
Make your first payment
- Download BULL Wallet from its official site or app-store link. Create a new wallet.
- Write down the 12 recovery words offline. Anyone who gets them can take the wallet. Do not photograph them, email them, paste them into a note, or type them into a website.
- Fund Instant Payments with a small amount. You can receive a Lightning payment, transfer from another wallet, or connect a Bull Bitcoin account and have a purchase delivered directly to the wallet.
- To pay, tap Send, scan the Lightning invoice, read the amount and fee, then confirm. Do not approve a blank or surprising amount because somebody says the QR is safe.
- To receive, choose Instant Payments → Receive → Lightning, enter the amount, and share the new invoice or QR. BULL's current invoices expire after 12 hours.
Start with an amount you can afford to lose. Make one payment, receive one payment, and confirm that your written backup is readable before adding more.
When the balance stops being pocket money
A phone wallet is convenient because the key is available to the phone. That is also its limit. Once the amount would hurt to lose, move it to on-chain Bitcoin protected by a COLDCARD.
BULL Wallet can remain the interface:
- Generate the savings seed on the COLDCARD and back it up. Never import those words into BULL Wallet or any phone.
- Import the COLDCARD wallet into BULL as watch-only. BULL supports COLDCARD imports by QR, file and NFC, depending on the model and workflow.
- Let BULL show balances, generate receive addresses and build a PSBT. Verify important receive addresses on the COLDCARD before sending a large amount.
- For a spend, read the destination, amount and fee on the COLDCARD screen, sign there, then return the signed transaction to BULL for broadcast. BULL supports camera, PSBT and NFC PushTx.
The phone gets the public wallet information it needs. It does not get the seed or private keys.
Exchange and wallet fit
This compares custody and wallet integration, not spreads or trading features. Fees, limits and availability change by country.
| Service | Bitcoin after a buy | FOSS self-custody wallet included | COLDCARD workflow | Lightning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull Bitcoin | Sent directly to a wallet you choose | Yes — BULL Wallet is MIT-licensed | QR/file/NFC watch-only import, PSBT signing, NFC PushTx | Yes, including BULL's Liquid swaps |
| Bitcoin Well | Sent directly to your own wallet | Bring your own wallet | Address delivery; no documented signer integration | Yes |
| Shakepay | Held in custody until you withdraw | No self-custody wallet included | Standard external withdrawal; no documented PSBT/NFC integration | Yes |
| Ndax | Held by Ndax or its custodians until you withdraw | No self-custody wallet included | Standard external withdrawal; no documented PSBT/NFC integration | Yes |
Bitcoin Well also gets the most important exchange decision right: purchased bitcoin goes to your wallet. Bull is the stronger fit for this particular setup because the wallet source is public, the exchange is integrated without taking custody of your bitcoin, and the same app can coordinate a COLDCARD without learning its seed.
Use BULL Instant Payments like cash in your pocket. Use on-chain COLDCARD storage like savings. The amount separating the two is personal; the rule is not.
